His style contains a fluidity and awareness that philosophy, much like art, does not like to follow straight lines. The stages discussed begin with Greek mythology, moving onto the contrasts between Plato and Aristotle, the Rise of Christianity, Humanism, and a special chapter on Emmanuel Kant, and finally the deconstructionism of Derrida and Hegel. Ferry concludes by examining the worth of philosophy today. In a world characterised by globalisation, the internet and fundamentalism, it seems that philosophy, with connotations both trite and complex, may have a more didactic role than we thought.
Luc Ferry is among the most dignified figures of France today. After gaining two doctorates in Philosophy and Political Science, Ferry was Minister of Youth and Education. He is the author of several works, including 'Learning to Live I & II 'and 'The Revolution of Love', which has been translated into over twenty languages.
