The Kabblist of Prague begins at the end of the 16th century with a fateful promise between Isaac and Jacob that will have repercussions on the entire Jewish community: their children Eva and Isaiah (as yet unborn) will be married and their families united throughout generations.

Eva’s grandfather Rabbi Loew, known as the Maharal, is the leader of the Jewish people in Prague who are under constant threat from their neighboring Christians. He is also a kabbalist of great renown. The Maharal has an important influence on Eva's life and encourages her education by asking David Gans, a young Rabbi, to be her private tutor.

Over the years, as she develops into a strong, intelligent woman, David and Eva fall in love. But Isaac and Jacob’s foolish promise will lead to a series of dramatic events that keep them apart.

When Prague is battered once more by Christian attacks, Eva begs the Maharal to create the Golem, a force from kabbalic lore that would save the Jews from annihilation. The Maharal reluctantly accepts and so is born this towering figure built out of mud that will protect the Jewish people. Every moment of Eva's life since the hour of her birth, all of the dramatic events she lived through up until now, all pointed to this one truth. The Golem had come as the fruit of Eva's destiny - the granddaughter of the only man alive capable of harvesting the purity of the Holy Word - the Maharal.

Idled by his own success, the creature is put to work as a beast of burden. The Golem has become the other, the exploited outsider who reflects the image of all who deal with him. But the creature can only be pushed so far before he pushes back.
