Eighteen-year-old Julius Washington is a rookie journalist at The Mercury. The son of an enslaved mother and a passing sailor, he dreams of travelling. One day Captain Paul Cuffee, a rich black Quaker, completely changes his life. He embarks on one of his ships bound for Negroland, a mysterious place in the far west of Africa. Together they plan to make a dream come true: the Grand Return of former African slaves to the land of their ancestors. Out on the high seas, Julius experiences terrible storms but also makes the acquaintance of some unlikely and very colourful characters: a French slave trader with a big heart, disillusioned plantation owners and bizarre indigenous types, wheeler-dealer priests and arms traffickers, a remarkable leopard man, and Diana the beautiful slave. In the course of his travels, he is caught up in a whirlwind of adventures that take him from one continent to another and during which he witnesses the birth of a country of dreams and misfortune: Liberia.
