The first of a teen collection devoted to the discovery of different professions, a novel presenting a young heroine (or hero), who is passionately involved in his or her work—in this case, Mahaut, special correspondent. Future novels will offer fascinating stories about the professions of veterinarian, archaeologist, researcher, and a host of others. Mahaut de Baut is amazingly gifted. She is fluent in an impressive number of foreign languages and she reads lips. But Mahaut is a loner who hides a secret and a handicap. Her twin sister died at birth, and the baby's first and last cry rendered Mahaut deaf. And yet in her mind, her twin still speaks to her, helping her to overcome all kinds of difficulties on her path to becoming a special correspondent, and trying to relieve her profound sense of guilt. As a reporter, Mahaut travels the world over seeking out the objective truth, whether investigating bird flu in China or talking to child soldiers in Africa. Her heroism plays a central role when she covers a story in Afghanistan and encounters the pain of mothers and children there. At the end of the novel is an instructive section that offers information about well known correspondents and their greatest stories, as well as information on how one trains to become a journalist.
