This autobiographical novel is carried by the vim and vigor of Québécoise author Denise Bombardier. A woman with a storied past—a feminist who experienced complicated and painful relationships that ate away at her trust in men—unexpectedly met, in her 50s, the love of her life.
Accepting an invitation from professor emeritus Philip T. Spencer, Denise travelled to Belfast, in Northern Ireland, to attend a conference organized at Trinity College. Anticipating an old bearded Guinness-scented Irishman, she was instead presented with an attractive English Francophile. Seductive without reverting to any “tactics,” he was a complete 360 from her previous experiences with men. Their meeting becomes a fast and furious coup de foudre.
At turns funny and emotional, The Englishman retraces the story of this momentous love: the improbable meeting, the getting together, the hang-ups at the beginning of the relationship, the long-distance travelling between Québec and Dublin until moving in together, and the quotidian frustrations and delights thereafter. The wedding was arranged, the ceremony held, but the honeymoon hasn’t ended…intimate and joyful, it’s a romantic and hopeful narrative that celebrates the power of a strong relationship.
