In 1880, at the Père-Lachaise cemetery in Paris, the young Egyptologist Thérèse Maurin is visiting her brother's grave when she suddenly hears a voice speaking in ancient Egyptian. Is she losing her mind? What does the message mean and who could be the bearer? Her father could decipher the meaning, but he lives in Egypt. Another man could help piece together the puzzle: Tatès-Blumberger, curator for ancient antiquities at the Louvre. That evening, Thérèse goes to the museum, only to find Tatès-Blumberger dead in his office, a handful of papyrus grasped between his lifeless fingers. Thenceforth, Thérèse finds herself drawn into a series of strange and horrible events. The gods of ancient Egypt seem to be at war…. At the Colonial Ministry, the Secretary of State Félix Faure informs her that her father and Tatès-Blumberger were working in secret to strengthen the French position against the English in Egypt. He asks her to join her father in Cairo, but Thérèse quickly learns that the English are not the only enemy…. During excavation work in the tombs and pyramids, a series of adventures reveal her true role and identity: she is the reincarnation of a pharaoh-queen, and must give an official burial for the pharaoh Snefru, whose embalmed body mysteriously disappeared some 4000 years ago.
