Far from the trendy', the author focuses upon apparently simple people whose lives are more complex than they seem at first. Pascal is nearing the end of his uneventful life. He lives in his house at a railroad crossing where no train has passed for years. Alone with his thoughts since the death of his wife, he wonders what he has missed out on in life, and if there are things he should have experienced. Sin being the spice of life, Pascal begins to examine his past existence in the context of the ten commandments, curious to recall if he has committed each and every one. This proves unexciting until, at last, he comes to the most important one, the one that evokes serious possibilities, “Thou shalt not kill”. Delicious characters and absurdly burlesque situations make this novel the mirror of Condou's chosen heroesdrab at first glance, but ultimately touching, bitter-sweet, tragic-comic, and anything but dull.
This is Isabelle Condou's second novel. The 30-year old writer's talent was unanimously remarked upon by the critics with the publication of her first work, about the unidentified soldier gone missing during World War I whose photo was published throughout France, Il était disparu (Plon, 2004).
