Its beloved, most iconic war photographer Robert Kovacs has died in French Indochina, leaving behind a gaping hole amongst his colleagues. But for Elizabeth Cole, who has been taking pictures for the society pages of the magazine for now four years, this tragic event is her one big chance at a change of life. Tired of idle galas, soirées and meaningless encounters with pretentious authors, she dreams of being in the field, knowing that she has what it takes to be a war photographer, even though her nearest and dearest think it to be a man’s job. On top of her motivation, she has one qualification that definitely wins her the spot as Kovacs replacement: she speaks French.
In November 1953, Elizabeth leaves for Saigon. Since she does not believe Kovacs’ death to be accidental, she starts her own investigation that will lead her into the heart of raging conflicts between factions, organized crime, free-lancing or government-owned spies, mercenaries, contract killers, adventurers, smugglers and arms traffickers. Embedded in Saigon, Elizabeth will roam the country and face most terrible dangers.
