Memoirs of a young lady of good breeding, broke but resourceful, who became Nicole de Buron.

A monarchist grandfather who loves military decorations, a grandmother who educates her granddaughter according to pre-[French] Revolutionary standards, a neurotic mother who is mad for men but lukewarm when it comes to her daughter, and a distant father, officer in the cavalry. We have just met the family of Mademoiselle de Buron, a well-bred young lady with an aristocratic “de” in the middle of her name, which can come in quite handy when looking for odd jobs. Her heteroclite working career has included a stint as an au pair in a Yorkshire boarding school, nanny to two little girls of the British upper crust, secretary at the royal bank of England and, finally, assistant at a women's magazine, where she started work at the uncivilized hour of 6:30 AM. Such is the professional life of this young woman who is not as conventional as all that. Her childhood is vaguely dickensian, her adolescence occasionally reads like Zola, but humour is her salvation, and Nicole de Buron uses it to fashion a life.
