Abuse from the Church

Release date : 26/10/2023
"I felt like I'd been living in a porn movie for over 10 years.”  Sister Camille
A shocking investigation. This is the first book on the state of sexual abuse in the Church, two years after the report from the Independent Commission on Sexual Abuse in the Catholic Church. The findings are incontrovertible: despite numerous scandals, the Church remains deaf and nothing has changed.

This book is based on an encounter with Camille, a sister who had recently left the St. Jean community: “I felt like I'd been living in a porn movie for over 10 years.” I couldn't believe my ears when she told me about the abuses and deviances in this congregation.... This book is based on an encounter with Camille, a sister who had recently left the St. Jean community: “I felt like I'd been living in a porn movie for over 10 years.” I couldn't believe my ears when she told me about the abuses and deviances in this congregation. St. Jean’s is not the only community incriminated by victims’ associations. One thing led to another, and she introduced me to other victims abused spiritually, sexually, and often both. I walked through the so-called new communities that flourished after Vatican II. Following their founder’s example, they abused hundreds of nuns and other believers. The crimes went on for decades without the church reacting. Worse still, leadership was often aware of the dramas unfolding behind the walls of the convents and monasteries. On October 5, 2021, Jean-Marc Sauvé, former vice-president of the Conseil d’Etat, submitted to the French bishops’ conference a report from the Independent Commission on Sexual Abuse in the Catholic Church (CIASE). Most of the report deals with pedophilia. One chapter is devoted to abused nuns. Its conclusions are damning. Abuse has been systemic within the Church. This “bombshell,” according to observers, led to reparation measures to try to cushion the shock of these mass crimes.

Two years after the report of the CIASE, has the situation changed? I interviewed lawyers, religious leaders, victims’ associations, and the victims themselves. Despite efforts at contrition and communication, victims are very often left to fend for themselves, canonic law is inadequate, penalties are astounding, and cases continue every week. This book draws up an inventory two years after the CIASE report. The striking testimonies raise questions: How did it come to this? Does the situation persist? Why does the Church, normally a vector of love, harbor so much violence?
