2002-2021. The first criminal case in France to be solved thanks to relatives’ DNA, the Kulik affair shook France and left an indelible mark on the French judicial system. Élodie Kulik, a bank manager in Péronne in Picardy, says goodbye to a friend after having dinner with him in town. The following morning her car is found in a ditch with her handbag lying on the passenger seat, but there is no trace of the young woman. Her carbonised body is found a few miles further on in an isolated location. The police investigators and the local criminal lawyer are initially confident that they will quickly lay hands on the murderer, the victim having called the emergency services at 22 minutes past midnight. This recorded message – on which the voices of two men can be heard and which makes for unbearable listening when the trial eventually takes place – is one of the key pieces of evidence. But against all expectations, the investigation ends up taking nineteen years, and in 2011 it breaks the French record for the most DNA samples ever taken (nearly 6,000).
