Loup Daredeville, a member of the small landed nobility, is studying at the Latin school of Armentières in the North of France. One day, his destiny is turned upside down as he rescues the wife of a local governor from a serious accident. From then on, he is rubbing shoulders with the great men of the Kingdom of Spain while remaining close to his origins and to the humblest. In the countryside, Calvinist sermons multiply and the word is liberated. The new, more contemporary, cult appeals to all segments of society. Loup's Catholic faith is shaken by the Calvinists' courage in daring to challenge the Church and the Inquisition. Loup takes part in their revolt, alongside the painter Bruegel who denounces in his own way King Philip's eccentricities by leaving clues in his paintings. After the Summer of Wonders, in 1566, when the people finally believe in a possible reconciliation, the king's repression turns bloody. Loup narrowly escapes death. Like hundreds of thousands of Flemings, he will choose freedom and exile.
