Gilles Jacob is Cannes; he served as director of the film festival for an unprecedented 22 years (1978-2000), and has been its President since 2001.

His memoirs offer not only insight into a man who has spent more than half a century living and breathing world cinema, but is a history of the world's greatest film festival filled with anecdotes about the stars who have climbed the famed red-carpeted stairs.

Jacob's personal vision was for the festival to have a focus on directors, and, in particular, a focus on discovering the next generation of the world's directing talent.

Among the filmmakers Cannes helped introduce to the world during Jacob's tenure were Australia's Jane Campion, Greece's Theo Angelopoulos, America's Coen brothers, Taiwan's Hou Hsiao-Hsien, Iran's Abbas Kiarostami and Denmark's Lars von Trier. As Jacob puts it, "Cannes is like a Catholic liturgy. To climb the stairs is a kind of ascension - like going to heaven."
