As a young French boy in the 19th century, Eugène had two dreams. The first was revolutionary — to introduce champagne to all men and women, of all social classes, not only members of the elite. The second was to prove the innocence of his best friend Paul who was unjustly accused of patricide.

The first of Eugène’s dreams becomes reality. Starting with nothing, Eugène founds his own company, Mercier Champagnes, and his bet paid off: he made champagne available to the masses. It went from being the wine of kings to the wine of all, everywhere in the world.

But Eugène died before his second dream could come true. In one of the Mercier wine cellars, his grandson Cornelius and Paul’s granddaughter Mary find the secret diary he kept between 1854-1904. At last, they discover the truth which allows them to break the curse that has eaten away at both their families for nearly a century.

Lorraine Fouchet perfectly mixes fiction with biography — the history of Eugène, the visionary founder of Mercier and her own ancestor interchanges with the story of Cornelius and Mary’s investigation in the 1970s.
