At a time of controversy over the principle of precaution, Jean de Kervasdoué offers a polemical work that deconstructs our irrational fears and attacks the crucial questions of tomorrow.
Fear of carcinogens, of pesticides, of GMOs, of waves from antennae, of nanotechnology, of running out of water, of being invaded. Fear, fear, fear! In hopes of self-protection, the French hunker down and let others participate in the scientific adventures of stem cells or gene transfer. They forbid the use of insecticides, but cover themselves with the stuff at the least buzzing in the air. They spend money they don't have on dozens of millions of vaccines against a virus which is, of course, contagious but scarcely virulent. They invoke the principle of precaution, which is really only conjuring uncertainty and which proves, in the long run, a good deal more costly and just about as effective as lighting a candle to St Jude, the patron of lost causes. With pretentious ostentation, the spirit of the Enlightenment grows dim in the country where it was born. Fear has become the sole basis for every collective action. Truly an insult to reason, fear is also the source of the declining competitiveness of our businesses. And it's no great surprise, for luck smiles on those who dare.
