Out of fear of becoming superfluous following the fall of the Wall, countries (democratic or not), strategic think tanks, intelligence agencies and other opinion makers consciously fabricated the enemy. They described a world made up of threats, risks and challenges.

Is an enemy necessary? It is certainly useful to unite a nation, establish its power and build up its military and technology industries. Different classifications of “enemy” can be observed over the last 20 years: near enemy (border conflicts: India-Pakistan, Greece-Turkey, Peru-Ecuador), planetary rival (China), intimate enemy (civil wars: Yugoslavia, Rwanda), hidden enemy (conspiracy theory: Jews, communists), absolute evil (religious extremism)…
