When Vinh loses his life in a fire at the silk mill, Laure loses the will to live. However, the kidnapping of Alexandra the day after the funeral rekindles Laure's fighting spirit and she finds the courage to reveal the truth: six years earlier, on the road to Hanoi, she went by the name Claire Mackert, friend and companion to the wealthy Laure de Cirey. When the real Laure de Cirey died, Claire, on the advice of Dr Varney, assumed her identity and became Alexandra's “mother”. Helped by her best friend Marouchka, her servant, the sage Phaoh, and the French trader Marchenoir, she sets off in search of the missing girl. Soon, she discovers who is behind the kidnapping: Dr Varney and his partner is crime, the despicable Delaunay, a man who will do anything for money….
