Forbidden to stay in China and with no news from Zhang, Thomas has no choice but to follow Macartney's mission and go back to England. He now knows that Grace has not been unfaithful but it's too late, he is obsessed by Zhang and cannot bear the idea of giving her up. During a stop at Macao, he decides to set off to find her. In Canton, he persuades Prince Jiaquing to let him stay in China, on condition that he tries to convince the British to stop their opium dealing. In England, politicians disagree about what to do about China. When David Fairbanks decides to fight the rapidly spreading opium traffic in China, Andy McCarthy sets up a large scale operation in India. Thomas settles into his new life and discovers the culture of China, with fascination. After many adventures, he finds Zhang again. Some years later, a new British mission led by Thomas Staunton arrives in China, determined to open its borders to British trade. Grace and David Fairbanks, now married, are with them.
