During more than a hundred days, twenty legionaries who have been driven out of a retreat center for alcoholics in Middle Laos by the bloody Japanese Coup on March 9th of 1945 try to fid a way to the Chinese border. Pursued both by the enemy and by their physical decline, thrown into the hell of a hostile jungle, from steep mountains to demon-haunted valleys, they are held in an iron grip by Warrant Officer Janicek, assisted by Doctor Aubrac and a young nurse. The presence of a woman and the deprivation of alcohol are enough to exacerbate their flayed characters. Day after day, they are torn apart, exhausted, bare footed, starving, scorched by the sun, swept by the mousson and drowning in the foggy summits. And yet, their leader has decided to save them, despite themselves.

Will their long experience as soldiers and long-standing camaraderie awakened by the Japanese help them make their way to the inaccessible China? Willpower may not be enough to resist the call of death, whether it comes from a gunshot, misery and hunger, or unquenchable thirst.
