This romantic comedy in tune with the times highlights the absurdity of our modern lives. In this first novel, the author evokes the quest for meaning at work for young executives and the injunctions of happiness through the couple with humor and perspective.
Etienne, a young romantic and slightly egocentric publicist in his thirties, lives comfortably in Paris. He is passionate about board games, witty and sarcastic, and rather happy, but he has been single forever. His entourage wonders about him and the gaze of society begins to weigh on him. At work,... Etienne, a young romantic and slightly egocentric publicist in his thirties, lives comfortably in Paris. He is passionate about board games, witty and sarcastic, and rather happy, but he has been single forever. His entourage wonders about him and the gaze of society begins to weigh on him. At work, he is secretly in love with Laura, a young woman who is his opposite: she is very sociable and popular, she is addicted to Instagram…

One day, at a family meal, Etienne learns that his sister is pregnant and that his brother is moving in with his girlfriend. They are far ahead of him in the race for achievement… He has nothing to announce and these two news are the last straw that breaks the camel’s back of his ego. Suddenly, he reveals to his relatives that he is in a stable and strong relationship with a certain Sofia from Sofia in Bulgaria. He is eager to introduce her to them. The only problem is, Sofia is totally fictional. Etienne invented her by drawing heavily on a documentary about Bulgaria that he watched recently. Everyone is delighted and reassured that this eternal bachelor is not a lost cause after all. But Etienne gets caught up in his lie: he starts a one way correspondence with his imaginary lover, telling her about his life and his professional and sentimental troubles. He even talks about Sofia to his colleagues.

To perfect his lie, he buys a range of women’s clothes and beauty products that he scatters around his apartment in case of an unexpected visit from one of his relatives. He also learns to cook Bulgarian specialties and takes an interest in the board games in vogue in this country where he has never set foot. Besides, he will have to remedy that for more credibility. He takes off for Sofia where he is supposed to visit his girlfriend of the same name. A video call is planned to introduce the beauty to his family and of course, Etienne has everything planned: after hours of research on Facebook, he managed to find three potential Bulgarian Sofias with whom to get in touch to have them play the role. He naturally proposes a date to one of them during his trip. He meets her in a bar, they get to know each other, get drunk and the young woman easily agrees to participate in the video call to be introduced to the family of the liar. That evening, they end up sleeping together.

One conclusion is obvious: Etienne had never had so much success with women before his invented relationship with Sofia. Even his colleague Laura seems strangely attracted to him! As soon as he returns to France, they get closer and start a relationship. Ironically, Etienne now has to break up with Sofia but this will prove to be much more difficult than he thought! Etienne, once self-centered, will give himself a beautiful lesson in empathy by discovering that the beginning of happiness may be to take an interest in others and to seek to make them happy.
