After thirty years on the run, Gilles Bertin, former front man of the punk group Camera Silens, turned himself in to the police… Now he recounts his incredible time in exile.
The robbery was the talk of the town. On April 26, 1988, an improbably band of miscreants—punks, anarchists and druggies—stole some cash-in-transit vans to open the vaults of Brink’s in Toulouse. On April 26, 1988, an improbably band of miscreants—punks, anarchists and druggies—stole some cash-in-transit vans to open the vaults of Brink’s in Toulouse. The loot? 11.7 million francs in small denominations (some 2.8 million euros) and not a shot fired. After years of investigation, some of the participants were questioned and 150,000 francs were found, but the main players and the rest of the money had disappeared…
Among them was Gilles Bertin, the frontman of the punk group Camera Silens. Investigated by Interpol, he left his wife and child behind and fled to Lloret-del-mar, a town on the Spanish coast, then Lisbonne. With his part of the loot, he created a new life for himself far from delinquency, with a job, a wife, a child, and friends. And then, in 2016, he decided to go back. He wanted to settle his accounts, rediscover his true identity and his oldest son, and tell his younger son the truth. He crossed the Pyrenees on foot, found his lawyer Christian Etelin in Toulouse, and turned himself in. Condemned in 2004 to ten years in prison for contempt of court, he instead received a suspended sentence of five years. Today, he is free.
The ex-punk’s story is hard and moving, but also quite funny at times, as he recalls his incredible life as an outlaw: concerts, drugs, mixing with the wrong crowd, minute by minute of the robbery itself, his years in hiding, meeting his wife, his fears and escapes, and the deaths that shook him. This is a text filled with unbelievable humanity.
