He goes to a hotel deep in the Vosges mountains, the Hôtel des Rouges Pierres, run by Alison. Why did he come there? Are the reasons he gives, when he gives them, the real ones? He is an "old gentleman", 71 years old, alone, who has come to take a break. He seems very interested in the owner of the hotel, as if he knew her... Flashback to the highlights of Donelly's life: his meeting at a Fine Arts students' party with the woman who was to become his wife; life together, friendships, the child born in 1976... And the child's death thirty years later...

At the beginning of the year 2020, when lockdown begins, another drama breaks out: a horse from the riding school adjacent to the hotel is found dead and mutilated in its paddock...

With their lives in freefall, Donovan and Alison grow closer. The big question that remains is: why did Donovan come here?
