Such A Calm Young Man

The literary event of 2022. A magnificent stylist, Yves Viollier tells of friendship betrayed and generosity abused. Or is it more a question of impossible repentance and masked shame? Perhaps what the novelist is really asking is this essential question: what is hidden in the face we show?

The last time we saw each other, more than a year ago, my uncle was still going strong. I asked him the question: "Have you talked to your friends?" He replied: "I haven't dared yet..."
Roger Martin charmed them. He was welcomed into this village, of which the narrator is the mayor, as a lifelong friend. A widower in his seventies, he needed a family. And they all opened their arms to him. He became the father, the grandfather, the old man that young people loved.
The disappointment was as violent as the love and friendship had been sweet. The timeline went taut and the truth about Roger, as a young man, was revealed. He had played a fatal role in the theatre that was the Occupation. The text is both warm and chilling, written with sobriety and a great sense of detail, anecdote, description and dialogue. The subject is drawn with the greatest humanity. The story never flags. Yves Viollier, a writer of purity, deserves more than ever to be called the "Giono of the Vendée".
