Louise of the Leafy Shade

Collection : Terres de France
Release date : 12/03/2020
Father and daughter were holding hands with their eyes closed. They looked like they were sleeping.
They were found in their house, which was called Leafy Shade. It was after the Great War in the Vendée in western France. At the time, suicide was beyond the pale, to say nothing of the suicide of a father and daughter. Louise was a young and precociously talented painter... They were found in their house, which was called Leafy Shade. It was after the Great War in the Vendée in western France. At the time, suicide was beyond the pale, to say nothing of the suicide of a father and daughter. Louise was a young and precociously talented painter who had already begun to exhibit her works at salons alongside the recognised masters. She was known both for her talent and her modesty, and she had a bright future. The village clammed up after their death and, though there were rumours, the mystery was never cleared up. They had been intending to sell their beloved house and to run a shop in La Rochelle. Perhaps they ultimately just couldn’t face the idea…

The inspiration for Louise is the painter Marie Renard. The novel depicts the harsh life of farmers in the Vendée, the First World War, women working in the fields in the absence of the men, and the cruel winters. It also explores art, a passion that came out of nowhere, and the blossoming talent of a young woman who has to lead too different lives on the front foot. A dark meander through the marshes where guilty secrets have been swallowed up.
