Julien Leclerc, a Parisian journalist, moves to Périgord to fulfil his
dream of writing a novel. He rapidly becomes fascinated by the figure
of Gilberte de Montastruc, the last owner of the local manor house. A
film actress unable to make the transition to the talkies, she marries
a country squire much older than herself. A widow by the 1930s, she
lives in grand style with her lover, a far-right sympathiser, and lights up
Parisian intellectual circles with her charm and culture. When war is
declared, she takes refuge on her manor and during the Occupation
plays host to illustrious artists, who travel down specially from the
capital. They include the famous writer Pierre Benoit, the author of
Koenigsmark, but also Nazis and collaborators. At the same time;
she hides a Jewish friend and indirectly assists the Resistance. After
France is liberated, she disappears without a trace. Unfortunately, when Julien tries to find out more, he comes up against a wall of silence. But when he insists on buying an overrun meadow known as the field of martyrs from his neighbour, it is as if he has opened Pandora’s box: the inhabitants divide into factions, death comes to the village, and tragic secrets from the Second World War are gradually revealed.
