Which was bad news for poor Adeline, long since a widow and reluctant to sell her tumbledown cottage with its rickety steps, sunken shutters and a roof bowed by the onslaught of successive winters. Is it possible to sell up one’s whole life? There is also another down-to-earth villager who misses nothing of what’s going on: the old farmer with the sun-weathered complexion who calmly observes all the human folly playing out before him.
