This crucial episode of the Resistance during WW2 is yet little known. The Shelburne network helped save 307 officers and Allied soldiers in 1944. Working with French resistance, it helped stock arms, money and phony documents, committed acts of sabotage. It also ensured communications with the Allies and extracted Airmen whose planes had fallen in occupied territory.
These foreign soldiers in France - including Jane Birkin’s father - belonged to the SOE (Special Operations Executive) and MI9 (the 9th British military office). Alain Stanké also produced a documentary (As-tu vu Alphonse ?) on this network, for Radio Canada, with testimonies of surviving members such as UK film director Guy Hamilton.
Foreword by Jane Birkin.
