A treat for all fans of the French series “The Bureau”: discover “Action Unit”, the special unit of the General Directorate of External Security (DGSE) in charge of the most secret, clandestine and illegal operations for the French Republic.
A seasoned climber, lieutenant-colonel Coralie Desnoyers is the second in command of the 27th alpine hunter’s battalion. In early august 2020, her unit is dispatched to Beyrouth in order to protect the French President who is visiting the Lebanese capital in the aftermath of the gigantic explosion in its harbor.... A seasoned climber, lieutenant-colonel Coralie Desnoyers is the second in command of the 27th alpine hunter’s battalion. In early august 2020, her unit is dispatched to Beyrouth in order to protect the French President who is visiting the Lebanese capital in the aftermath of the gigantic explosion in its harbor. Coralie is the best shooter in her regiment which makes her the obvious choice for leading a group of 10 snipers up in the hills around Beyrouth tasked with watching over the President all along his journey through Beyrouth. And she is also the one to spot and kill two terrorists with her 12, 7 mm PGM rifle, thus saving the President’s life. Three days later, she is decorated by the President himself and rises to the rank of colonel. Almost at the same time, the Action Unit has to suffer two resounding defeats: Hayat Boumeddiene, widow of Amedy Coulibaly, the terrorist who attacked and killed numerous French citizens in a kosher supermarket in Paris in 2015, vanishes in the middle of a joint operation at the Syria-Turkey border that was designed to “neutralize” her. And in the Aïr Massif in northern Niger, the assassination of a radicalized Islamic leader, who has been a thorn in the side of France for too long, goes terribly wrong, causing the death of several members of the team. The military staff committee, who has always been opposed to the existence of this unit that does not answer to its command, jumps on the occasion to try and disband the Action Unit. But the President himself opposes this measure and puts Coralie in charge of the unit. A first for a woman who has to instill respect in her male subordinates, and a difficult task since the unit is now fractured and beaten and its defeats are being gleefully relayed by the press. The situation starts to resemble the mediatic upheaval caused in 1985 by the accidental death of a press photographer in the explosion of the Greenpeace ship Rainbow warrior, sunk by French secret agents in order to prevent the environmental activists from interfering with French Nuclear tests in Polynesia. As before, the unit’s failure and its mediatic exposure fan the flames of in-house conflicts – a difficult task for Coralie who finds herself the object of a hastily botched security investigation. Despite her appearance as a model soldier that impressed the directors of the DGSE, she is vulnerable to scrutiny because of her double life: at night, her impulses take over and she spends torrid hours in shady hotels with female and male strangers alike. But time is pressing and the political stakes get higher and higher. The French soldiers have to be rescued from the Niger region – but at what cost? The “Black widow” has to be captured. And the different missions started by her predecessor have to be executed as well as possible. But above all, Coralie has to stop “Target Sierra”, the grey eminence behind the European, especially the French, Far Rights, from causing further harm, especially in the context of the upcoming French Presidential Election.
This mission will reveal itself to be the young commander’s baptism of fire. Eventually, Coralie Desnoyers will have no choice but to take its execution into her own hands.
