Being among the only women who succeeded in the first national exam for labour inspector, Claude Tardy has to disguise herself as a man to work. She learns about the death of a young man, hung with metal wires in a wire drawing mill. It is deduced that he committed suicide.
Not long after that, Claude has to go to the “Glacières de Sylans”, an ice-house factory. It is there, in a narrow lake, that they cultivate the ice of all of France. The body of a dead worker is found in the lake, apparently frozen for months. Weirdly, Claude recognizes the boy of the wire drawing mill. She undertakes to discover the truth…
Not far from there, the Perrin Soieries are spinning and weaving silk since the beginning of the century. A true town within a town, the manufactory possesses one of the biggest boarding-school-factory of France. There, more than six hundred young girls live as residents, most of the time until they get married. This is where Sister Placide works. She is confused by the arrival of a new girl, who looks a lot like a former resident… who left fifteen years earlier, and who Sister Placide protected as if she was her own daughter.
Against all odds, the mystery surrounding the two orphans and the one surrounding the young resident will reunite Claude and Sister Placide in a thrilling investigation for which they will have to free themselves from the restraints of their time.
