In 1976, the first edition of this book provoked much debate. Geographer Yves Lacoste was very critical about the "geography of teachers", that appeared in the 19th century in Germany and France and gradually become an ideological discourse masking the strategic and political importance of any reflection on geography. Above all, Yves Lacoste showed that another form of geography also existed, older but still highly pertinent today, the "Headquarters Geography", a set of cartographic representations and knowledge regarding geography, which constitutes a strategically Important database used by ruling minorities.
Refusing either of these conceptions, Lacoste stated that the issues raised by geography concern all citizens, because it is impossible to exclude military, political and social phenomena: This book presents fascinating, multifaceted issues, at the crossroads of many disciplines such as history, economy, sociology and science.
