I Must Have Dreamed Too Deeply

Release date : 28/02/2019
Via four stopovers and a game of mirrors between 1999 and 2019, Michel Bussi’s latest novel blends emotion and suspense as it builds to a remarkable final twist in the tale.
2019 - Nathy, an attractive air hostess recently turned 50 is leading a peaceful existence with her husband Olivier in their house in the Parisian suburbs. They have two daughters. The eldest, Laura, leads an ordered life with Valentin, who is a gendarme, and their twins Ethan and Noé. The youngest, Margot, with whom Nathy has a more complicated relationship, will soon be flying the nest.

One fine day, Nathy is headed to the airport to take a flight to Montreal. On her way, she notices something completely unexpected. Her schedule is curiously similar to that of twenty years ago. The same destinations and the same dates: Montreal from 28 to 29 September, Los Angeles from 6 to 8 October and Jakarta from 18 to 20 October. And it’s the same crew: Florence, her favourite colleague, Georges-Paul Marie, the well-groomed steward with the dry wit, Emmanuelle Rioux aka ‘Sister Emmanuelle’, the head of the cabin crew who is always immaculately turned out, and Jean-Max Ballain, the captain and incorrigible skirt-chaser. The only new face in this improbable set of coincidences is Charlotte, a young trainee who is Nathy’s protégé.

The rock band The Cure are also on board, as they were in 1999.
And it was on that same flight in 1999 that a stranger completely upended her life.

At Gate M, Nathy fell for the charms of Ylian, a passionate young musician with a bright future who was on tour with The Cure. After exchanging a few words on the flight, they arranged to meet in front of the Métropolis music venue, where the bouncer Ulysse became their friend and their confidant for life.

Nathy was married and Ylian was as free as a bird, so a relationship seemed completely off the cards. And yet they were drawn to each other by a mysterious force, perhaps that very same force which has led Nathy to relive such an important episode in her life again in 2019. But how to explain the staggering coincidences mounting up around her? So many similarities surely cannot be down to simple chance. When the past and present repeat themselves to such an extent that there can be no rational explanation for it, will Nathy be forced to admit that it is possible to travel back in time?
