Edward Curtis is the story’s hero against his will, carried by the spirit of the Great American West. The scriptwriter Jean-Louis Milesi brings to life an adventure that will open the eyes of the famous photographer on Native Americans and their disappearance through the force of his writing.
Henry, a highwayman, should have cut Edward Sheriff Curtis’s throat on that July day in 1900. However, the same man saves his life. Henry, a highwayman, should have cut Edward Sheriff Curtis’s throat on that July day in 1900. However, the same man saves his life. Mika Ohiteka, which means “fierce raccoon” in Sioux, is Henry’s real name. He was ten years old in 1862, when the Sioux were deported from Minnesota following another failed war against whites. A zealous mob attacked their convoy as it passes through a town and Mika was separated from his people in the dead of winter. He made it up the river and arrived in Mankato. The young Indian, dressed as a white man, blended in with the crowd gathered to witness a mass hanging. Thirty-eight Sioux warriors were sentenced to death. His older brother was one of them.

Thirty-eight years later, Curtis is robbed of his photographic equipment by bandits. Among them is a certain Henry … without whom he would perish in the vast wilderness of the American West. A long journey will take both men to a reservation, where the photographer will discover the Native Americans’ deplorable living conditions. There, he learns the truth about Henry, his new friend.

Curtis will then spend the next thirty years of his life witnessing the beauty and grandeur of these vanishing peoples.
