As she is cycling home after dark, little Lydie is killed by a hit-and-run driver who leaves no clues. Seven days later, Franck Hamonic, an alcoholic and notorious lowlife, is found hanged. Is it suicide? Gendarme Philippe Derval is the first to have his doubts, not least because this individual had lots of enemies with scores to settle, despite his relatively young age... One of the first witnesses he interviews is none other than 17-year-old Sterenn. She is the daughter of market gardeners and also Franck’s little sister, and she hung out a lot with Hamonic. The information
she shares is highly revealing. Other murders follow, but the modus operandi is different. Whom to believe?
The investigation gets bogged down, but there is pressure from the examining magistrate who wants the guilty party identified. Derval has to contend both with this pressure and the emotional chaos going on inside him. Meanwhile, his relationship with Irène is painfully falling apart and he can’t control his attraction to the pretty primary school teacher Florence.
