At first glance, they look so much alike, one brunette, the other blonde, that everyone believes they are sisters. Because they both have a harelip, Marie and Jeanne, seven years old, become friends on their school’s benches in Finistère in 1931. Their first friendship. Their last. Stolen, happy but ephemeral, moments soon to be destroyed by Hubert Lesvêque, a dignitary who does not tolerate the fact that his adopted daughter Marie – adopted against his will by his wife – is friends with the daughter of a craftsman, a basket maker. Then comes that fateful night, that dramatic night when the world is turned upside down. A few years later, the basket maker and his daughter now live in their house deep in the woods. Lesvêque's hatred has pursued them all along, and now they are being surrounded by the German occupier. Their life is hanging by a thread, always on the lookout. As they hide what no one else should know.
