The egalitarian obsession

Collection : La Cité
Release date : 19/10/2023
Confusing equal rights with real equality is a real issue in the modern Occidental societies. What if this egalitarian obstinacy led to the greatest injustices? This unfiltered essay points out the excesses - even the violence - to which this obsessive fight for equality leads us and sets out to find ways out.
L'Obsession égalitaire offers a reflection on equality, highlighting an illusion and a risk: believing, on the one hand, that it is synonymous with justice, and on the other hand, turning it into a necessarily anti-democratic injunction to uniformity.

L'Obsession égalitaire offers a reflection on equality, highlighting an illusion and a risk: believing, on the one hand, that it is synonymous with justice, and on the other hand, turning it into a necessarily anti-democratic injunction to uniformity.
Statistics are clear: France is one of the most egalitarian countries in the world, thanks in particular to an unrivalled redistribution effort. Yet the French are worried about the future, and even angry. At the same time, they are exasperated by the ever-increasing presence of the State and its increasingly ineffective policies. Why is this so? In this essay, the author explores the deep-rooted reasons for this French malady, the obsession with egalitarianism, at the root of many of the blockages and exasperations undermining society. By confusing equality with uniformity, the toxic quest for equality persists in decapitating success by multiplying taxes and regulating behaviour; by equating difference with discrimination, it prevents us from proposing policies adapted to each challenge. Worse still, it devalues merit and prevents mobility. In fact, the fight for equality leads to injustice, frustration, and a threat to democratic balance.
