Henri Grouès, the man who would become the Abbé Pierre, was born in 1912. He was a Resistant during World War II, and in 1949 he founded Emmaüs, to defend the homeless. The organisation quickly spread to over forty countries. In 1988 he created the « Fondation de l'abbé Pierre » to promote housing for the underprivileged. Throughout his life, the Abbé Pïerre has led a determined crusade in defense of the poor. Today, he spends every other month in solitude and prayer in the austere atmosphere of a Capucine convent in Normandy.
