The meeting of two lonely people and a journey through the lost world of the fairs and itinerant artists of the 19th century. A wonderful coming-of-age novel about the transmission of knowledge across the generations, the discovery of life’s secrets and the nascent art of photography.

The 16-year-old orphan Jeanne flees the farm where she has been made to work as a servant by her malicious mother-in-law. Pitching up in the Dordogne, she is taken on as a kitchen hand by a benevolent innkeeper. When an itinerant photographer arrives in town, the girl is fascinated by this mysterious man in his fifties with a caravan that serves as his darkroom. He decides to take her on as an apprentice, and the intelligent and curious Jeanne gradually becomes his indispensable assistant. She perfects her patter for the fairs, sets up the stand and lugs around the heavy camera obscura and its tripod. The two of them become close and when she finds out her mentor’s secret (his homosexuality), it merely serves to strengthen the bond between these two lonely people.
