“Christianity has slowly become the exact opposite of what it is in the New Testament.” declared Soren Kierkegaard. Frédéric Lenoir explains what has become of Christ's original radical message.

Frédéric Lenoir demonstrates that Christianity is an invisible but cohesive force that has forged modern Europe. It combined Greek, Jewish, and Roman influences into a synthesis that constituted the intellectual and cultural cement of continental Europe for over fifteen centuries. Moreover, it gave birth to the concepts that embody the matrix of modernity: separation of powers, equality of all human beings, the primacy of the individual over the group, fraternity, a concept of history as progress, and many others. These values that remain the basis of our social bond became invisible when they were absorbed by the humanism of the Enlightenment, but they are still there. Could it be that this invisible Christianity we now perceive as secular humanism constitutes the true philosophy, the real message of Christ?
