A Certain Paul Darrigrand

Release date : 24/01/2019
After Stop With Your Lies, the trademark sensitivity of Philippe Besson returns. Here, the love stories of his youth are marked by doubt and the struggle of being true to himself.

It’s the late 1980s and Philippe Besson is twenty-two years old. Having left his hometown of Charentes, he is now studying law in Bordeaux. On campus, he meets a certain Paul Darrigrand, three years his senior and with whom he becomes inseparable. But Paul is married, and to a young woman who shares a real connection with our narrator. This is just one of the factors which should discourage the desire which pushes the two men together. Nevertheless, during a trip to Ile de Ré Paul makes the first move, hurtling them together with a sensual, burning passion which is destined for secrecy. Realizing that he will never truly be able to ‘love him in broad daylight’, Philippe suddenly falls gravely ill. On the surface the two events appear to have no connection, but how can they not be linked in some way? How to ignore the language of the body? How to turn a blind eye to the simultaneity of desire and suffering?
After Stop With Your Lies, Philippe Besson resumes his dialogue with the ghosts of his youth and dives deeper into the intimate story of his past. In this somber and melancholic tale of impossible love, death prowls ominously under the surface. While in the background the turbulence of a violent outside world signals the end of carefree times, it is in his own body that the narrator feels the full brutality of the social constraints which have weighed on him since childhood. Indeed, life serves as metaphor for Besson, as the real events he relates here will later inspire one of his most famous novels, His Brother.  Here, Besson offers the reader a few behind-the scenes secrets all while continuing to produce some of his greatest writing.
