The social services have entrusted three sisters - Jeanne, Thérèse and Monique - to the care of Mademoiselle Eugénie Martin at the Château des Marguerites. Jeanne was ill-treated in her previous host family and the daughters were taken away from their mother, who was deemed incapable of looking after them. Their fathers were only fleeting presences. Also living at the Château des Marguerites are Mademoiselle Martin’s parents and her Aunt Louise. Jeanne would so much like them to become her family. When Charlotte, their newly born half-sister, arrives at the Château, the delighted residents fawn over the baby, who becomes the favourite and is treated differently to everyone else.
One day, Jeanne finds out that Charlotte, who is now seven years old, has been adopted by Mademoiselle Martin. Jeanne, Thérèse and Monique feel rejected and neglected until they finally leave the Château des Marguerites at the age of sixteen. Can we ever cure the absences and wounds of childhood?
