Philippe Ferrière, a maker of luxury ceramics, and Irène de Beauvallon, the rich heiress of the Val Fleuri vineyard in the Cévennes, have thrown in their lot together. Irène has entrusted the upkeep of her estate to a tenant farmer couple, Robert and Amélie Chassagne. The eldest of the Ferrière children, Damien, is still a child and strikes up a close friendship with Marion Chassagne. They are often seen playing together among the vines and out in the scrubland. One day, they make a remarkable discovery: a huge cave whose walls are adorned by splendid paintings. They take the decision to keep its existence a closely guarded secret.

In 1932 after finding a patch of red clay soil in an uncultivated corner of the estate, Philippe decides to open a garden vase workshop in the region. He makes no secret of his ambitions, believing that he can compete with the leading local manufacturers, the Boisset family. And so the Val Fleuri pottery is born, and its reputation rapidly grows…

But from the 1930s right up to the 1970s, the eternal question remains: can his heirs sustain the success and maintain the reputation of the pottery?
