~1679: Louis XIV is residing in the Château de Saint Germain, famous
for its terraced gardens and its elaborate water features: fountains,
cascades and more. The King’s all-powerful favorite courtesan, the
flamboyant Duchess of Montespan, turns heads wherever she goes.
As the pleasure-seeking court in Saint Germain dances away, in
Paris, people are invoking the Devil, profaning churches, attending
black masses and sacrificing children. That is what Police Lieutenant
General Gabriel Nicolas de La Reynie – the first person appointed to
the post – finds out. When he arrests the witch La Voisin, the former
Paris police prefect and founder of the investigative police doesn’t
know that he has taken the first step towards unraveling a shady
affair of poisoning people.
Entrenched in his office in Grand Châtelet, La Reynie has his work
cut out for him… all the more so in that a relentless, shadowy foe
is doing his best to foil him at every step, and that, among other
nasty criminals, a Parisian woman is knocking off half of the French
capital’s sturdiest male specimens. Will La Reynie manage to avoid
all the traps being set for him in this, his first investigation as Police
Commissioner?
