In 1660, Nicolas Fouquet, Louis XIV’s superintendent of finances, is the richest and most envied man in all of France. He is surrounded by a circle of the intellectual and artistic elite: La Fontaine, Le Nôtre, and Molière among other notables. His own castle, Vaux-le-conte, will serve as inspiration for Versailles.
Fouquet’s raises his adopted daughter Althéa in the midst of such glory; all predict a bright future for the charming and beautiful young woman. But Louis XIV’s envy will destroy everything Fouquet has created. Fouquet’s only crime was to be more brilliant and to shine brighter than he who would soon demand to be call the Sun King. He is disgraced, put on trial and condemned into exile.
