Plunge into the memories of the appointed jester of Louis XII and François I, the one who inspired Victor Hugo for le Roi s'amuse and Giuseppe Verdi's Rigoletto, the one historians call Le Fevrial, alias Triboulet.
Abandoned by all, Alain Triboulet is a humorist on the skids, to the extent that now, whisky is his only friend. Inspired by the sweet vapors of the grain, one night when thoroughly sloshed he takes a marionette in a jester's costume from the back of the closet and is suddenly inspired to make him speak. But the jester, who transports us to the far off fifteenth century, is none other than Le Fevrial, also known as Triboulet. Hunchbacked and limping, he was the sole jester of two kings, one of the most important figures of the French court under both Louis XII and François I. The favorite, the most attentive, the confidant and sometime advisor of both kings, he amused them by provoking the courtiers. His latest jokes were always eagerly awaited, with both anticipation and apprehension. This is a novelistic journey over a half century of Renaissance Europe, where Triboulet, witness to all the major historical events, crosses the paths of Charles V, Leonardo da Vinci, Henry VIII of England, Erasmus, Calvin, Rabelais and many others. Amusement, or wisdom? The author explores the role of the jester to the powerful, constantly torn between the necessity and the burden of making others laugh.
