Bogged down by globalisation, one has the impression that Europe is sinking deeper into the routine of a decline it has allowed to become inevitable. The disintegration of Europe is no longer considered a science fiction scenario but has become a real possibility. The feeling is not one of a dramatic and imminent catastrophe, but rather that of an overwhelming but slow and inexorable degradation, like an ancient monument falling apart. Budget deficits resembling black holes, Euro zone members like Greece and Ireland teetering on the brink of bankruptcy, and record unemployment figures complete the dismal picture. One European in every six is out of work. This is the tragic situation on the continent that invented the welfare state. Those who constructed the European Union promised prosperity and work for all, but that vision has become dismally dim! How can anyone still believe in Europe? Europe, the great hope, has become Europe, the betrayer. It is thus inevitable and unavoidable that the European question will dominate political debate in the foreseeable future.
