Jean and his little sister Ophélie live at the foot of the Chartreuse mountains in the ‘old house’ with their grandparents Euphoisine and Jules, their great-aunt Séraphie, and their other grandmother Adèle. Nothing is known about their parents, except the legends recounted by their cousins. When the whole family is gathered together to celebrate the end of the haymaking season, the adults let certain words slip but lower their voices in the presence of the younger generation. Amid these pious, austere and taciturn rural folk in the east of France, where the days are structured around work, prayer and religious rituals, the children discover in the attic a box containing the diary of a great-aunt whom they have never heard of. It is like opening Pandora’s box. It transpires that the adults have been trying to protect the children by hiding from them certain family tragedies and the true links between the various members of the family. But the children nevertheless sense that something is awry and suffer accordingly. What are these unspoken secrets? And what will be the impact of this repressed atmosphere on these most fragile of souls?
