~~Professor Éric Caumes, one of the most renowned experts in infectious diseases, denounces a major deception in public health in this new book.

In France, they are at the heart of the French Federation of Vector-Borne Tick Diseases (FFMVT). But for the majority of doctors and other public health specialists, it’s nothing. In fact, with 55,000 cases seen by non-hospital doctors and 1,000 patients hospitalized for it each year in France, with no deaths reported, it seems excessive to turn it into a major issue. We are far from the figures reported by other serious infectious illnesses, like the flu, pneumonia, or tuberculosis. Even malaria, which doesn’t even exist in France and only encountered by travelers coming home from tropical destinations, kills more people than Lyme disease.
In this book, Professor Éric Caumes shows the general public how this phenomenon has become a real “societal ill,” complicated by the emergence of beliefs spread by social media and certain media outlets that give a platform to the “Lyme doctors,” despite contradictions with established scientific facts.
Caumes offers a double testimony that resounds like a warning cry.
First, as a professor and expert in infectious diseases (including Lyme disease) and head doctor of Pitié-Salpêtrière University Hospital in Paris. While he was in no way predisposed to take interest in the disease initially, he writes of how he became a supposed expert in Lyme due to the number of patients who came to consult him thinking they were suffering from it. In fact, almost 90% of them were victims of a diagnostic error and had been treated incorrectly as a result.
Second, he offers his testimony as an expert who has worked closely with several French public health authorities and watched a downward spiral occur before his eyes. “I met people who at first appeared quite capable, but who lost all sense of reality and moderation over this matter. This was especially true with the HAS (the French National Authority for Health), where I saw a degree of compromise rarely seen for health issues. Did Lyme make them go crazy?” He reveals maneuvers that he describes as scare tactics, “not to mention moral harassment, so unsettling was their repetition,” which often targeted him, along with any experts who didn’t share the opinion of the handful of resolute “Lyme doctors.” Such tactics were even used at the level of elected national representatives.
“Behind this story of so-called Lyme,” Éric Caumes summarizes without mincing his words, “are sick people who are truly suffering, whose paths have gone far off course with loads of useless supplementary exams and treatments as bizarre as they are ineffective, in the end leaving nothing but an underlying illness left undiagnosed, untreated. This story is also that of all the people who have been taken hostage by opportunistic associations and researchers and ineffective politicians.”
