She is disaffected with her middle-class life in Paris with her banker husband Pierre, and an unbridgeable chasm has opened up between them: he refuses to become a father. At the age of 26, she decides to walk out of the marital home, defying the prejudices of her era and her social class. Shortly afterwards she finds out that she is carrying Pierre’s baby. She finds refuge near Brive with her aunt Léontine, who has had to show courage in her own life. Claire can now freely indulge her passion for drawing, sketching pieces of furniture and children’s clothes. There is much gossip in the village and some of the men are keen to take advantage of her apparent vulnerability… By chance she meets Antoine, a metalworker with an unsettling charm, and she develops a curious relationship with him. Should Claire count herself lucky? She finds the man intriguing on account of his thoughtfulness, but which sometimes spills over into possessiveness, and his obscure and troubled past.

For all the obstacles and all her doubts, it is time for Claire to follow the same path trodden by Léontine before her: the path to freedom.
